As she sat on the couch in the living room, Michelle (23, from Sunderland) could hear the ticking of the clock, and her own short, shallow breathing. She thought about how to pass the time – what would she watch today?
Michelle, like so many others spent more time alone being inactive than out with her peers or doing exercise. This can have an adverse effect on mental and physical health.
Following from their life survey in 20-21, Gov.Uk reported that 6% (3 million) of people in England said they feel lonely “often” or “always”. People aged 16-24 are more likely to say they feel lonely “often” or “always” and the majority of those will be women from more deprived social-economic areas.
This is why Soccarena, in County Durham have appealed for women between the ages of 16-18 to come and ‘Play on the Pitch.’
Trevor Smith, Football Manager of Soccarena says “Individuals are welcome to join us from 7-8 pm on Wednesdays. We will arrange the teams and all equipment will be provided. All you need is yourself.”
According to NHSinform.com playing football has many physical benefits such as reducing the risk of heart disease and reducing body fat, as well as increasing stamina and muscle strength. In addition to increasing self-esteem and confidence. It’s also a great way to meet new people.
Michelle says, “I started ‘Playing on the Pitch’ at Soccarena a month ago. It got me out of the house, away from the telly and I have met some lovely people. I feel so much better in myself and look forward to Wednesdays now.”
